really remind me of Assuck and 324 with heavy weave a whirlwind of guitar work, a thick sludge bass providing a wall of sound, deep throaty vocals familiar of 324 sounding vox, great mix of blast beats drumming, really nice mixture of different beats and fills, singalong here and there and they stand out with really nice riff or even a solo!!
this is a solid full length that they still have and extremely thick and crushing atmosphere.. a great addiction to any grinder's collection

note : After inflicting deadly blows on my manhood with the latest nu-grind albums of Alienation Mental and Cerebral Turbulency, I had little courage and reason to expect anything different from Czech Republic's Khaaranus Productions. So when my limp hands fell upon their release of Needful Things' debut, at best I expected just another watered down hardcore/metalcore/nu-metal influenced grind band. As per the ritual, I sighed while slipping the disc in my player, stretched my body in case some contrived frolicking was required, and pressed play. What transpired next made me strongly empathise with the victims of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki nuclear bombing. A fiery blast so devastative that it wipes off all traces of flesh from your body. Suddenly mutilated grind zombies are passé and skeletons are in vogue. The formally presented ones that you see on their artwork are probably their listeners lined up and photographed just before their burial.
A bulldozing grind inferno is what you will be dealing with here. Instead of Nasum, think along the lines of the focussed intense grindcore of Rotten Sound and the Swiss blastcore band Mumakil, then throw in some gnashing old school madness of early Napalm Death along with a few Harmony Corruption era tunes, and finally weigh down the music with the grovelling grind of Excruciating Terror and early Nyctophobic. In short, contemporary blistering grindcore meets old-fashioned doggedness. Chaotic and explosive as it may seem, the music is very much in control and seems to go somewhere instead of dancing all over the place. As a matter of fact, the only direction in which Needful Things move is towards you, and that they do with considerable speed even though the sheer immensity of their size and the constant trailing cloud of debris behind them makes them look sluggish.More emphasis is laid on the riffs than on the speed, with every song having its own set of riffs and moments that just about distinguish it from the next one. Their bulk however obscures most of it. Maintaining a grim mood, the riffs lumber through the carnage that is created mostly by the thrashing of the cymbals and subdued snare pummelling, occasionally bending to pick up sprightly crust influences on the way before composure is invariably regained. Always insistent, the guitar tone is humongous: in the opening of “Disease of Mind/True Lie” it feels like an ocean liner is trying to slide over your body. It is also an excellent song featuring powerful Barney Napalm Death hooks with fitting growls, heavy crustiness in the vein of Extreme Noise Terror, a skin-rippling bass solo, and later pensive tunes that are reminiscent of Skitsystem. In addition to the standard scorching screams, the vocals comprise fiery wide-mouthed roars that all but engulf you in their delivery.A rejuvenating change from the weak tinny grindcore bands that you hear a lot today, Dead Point is a seriously good grindcore album that doesn't require Nasum-esque moshy parts or melodies like on the new Splitter album to sustain your attention – it manages to do that purely on the merit of its riffs and rare ballsy character. note : The Gathering left the whole doom metal thing behind before _Mandylion_, and with _Nighttime Birds_ they continue their exploration of beautiful female vocals with the heavier backdrop. _Nighttime Birds_ shows the lighter, more ethereal side of the band taking hold more strongly as well. "On Most Surfaces" opens the album surging through heavy riffs and moody atmospheres, and it has a soaring vocal that would probably be dismissed as bombastic were Anneke van Giersbergen's voice not so incredible. Hers is a voice of diamond and ice, beautiful but chilling. It is not surprising that when she sings, "I am the snow falling down on you," the spine-tingling kiss of her words are as soft and light as falling snowflakes. Songs like "Kevin's Telescope" and the later parts of "Confusion" climb to great heights, heaved up by powerful epic billows of keyboards and electric distortion. Cryptic lyrics go well with the aura of mystery painted by ethereal guitar lines and penetrating vocal melodies of the title track, as well as the inconspicuous layer of stark percussion which hides behind guitar and keys. "The May Song" is interesting, juxtaposing the warmth of a mellow Hammond organ (love that sound) and softly strummed guitars with a confrontational vocal backed by a more aggressive arrangement on the chorus. "Shrink" is a haunting piano ballad with van Giersbergen's voice bleeding onto the floor in the prettiest way. "I shrink and shrink until I'm gone," she sings sadly as an understated eighth-rock beat enters with a vaporous guitar line snaking through the arrangement. Beautiful.

As you can guess it, the compositions are simple and respectful of the old punk/crust manifests, with an "elastic" drumming, and some punky rhythms ("take you down to the empty side"). the vocalist, with his yelling voice, could make you think to a mix between DRI and GBH, with the "asiatic" touch! The fan of very virile crustcore like in the Scandinavian vein (DISFEAR and so on) will regret the punk side, that is still really present. Of course the band is not a bunch of honey pop music, but they do a "fluidier" music as a DRILLER KILLER for example. We stay in a vein of quick punk, with some grind accelerations, that make you think EXTREM NOISE TERROR, slower but effective...This fucking piece just kills, you can listen it 40 times without to feel bored, usually the crust is more something the makes your skull empty one time, but here you can crush your brain 100 times if you want! the only concern is the very long track ("take you down to the empty side"-10'33") with only one line of text and a very fast drum part, that can makes you dubitative...To sum up: and excellent album, short and effective, but without makes your head as a kinball ball (1.28 m diameter)"

note : Next to local crap bands like T42 and Cool Feet who constantly brag about their success stories, Petrograd have quietly started a revolution from the bottom up, and since their foundation about seven years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if they had sold already more albums like the two aforementioned bands taken together, except that they have located their market from the very beginning outside of Luxembourg. After a lot of rumours about the uncertain future of Petrograd, there's finally a new release, and even if it's not a regular album, this compilation is more interesting than most of its kind. Released by a small American independent label, this CD collects mostly contributions from split-releases (with the likes of Daddy Longleg, Unabomber, J. Church and Contravene) plus some material from early EPs. The goal of the compilation is to introduce Petrograd's body of work to the United States, and I think the job couldn't have done any better. While there are no tracks from the regular albums Isabelle, abc and 911, most songs have been only released on vinyl, the instrumental opener Play Now and a chill-out remix of the band's hit song July 20th are even unreleased (although these tracks alone wouldn't justify the purchase, being not really that representative). While completists probably own all the different split-releases, they'd get another really rare song, Pathetic Campfire Romance, previously only released on a CD-R compilation.
To those who have never heard of Petrograd, I should also write some words about their genre. It would be oversimplifying to dismiss them as a pop punk band, although that sounds so subversive, considering the explosive content of their lyrics. So they are more melodic than your average punk band, but more aggressive and focused than power pop bands. A fitting comparison might be later Hüsker Dü with a severe dose of amphetamines. The mixed male-female vocals sound very emotional, while the fast yet melodic music not only conveys a strong sense of energy, but also manages to write exceedingly catchy songs.
While their last album 911 showed the band at its creative peak, Trigger Happy is a perfect companion to that album, portraying Petrograd from a sketchier but no less charming side. 9 points, because the two remixes are nice pieces of novelty, but not necessarily what we have come to love about this band. And who knows, with so many more songs from split-releases and early EPs not yet featured on this compilation, we might even hope one day for a successor. Vinyl-phobics like me really enjoy compilations like this!
